5 Time Saving Tips To Healthy Eating

Because I am so busy with my full-time job, a part-time business and a son, I have devised some time-saving tips to healthy eating along the way. I work 12 hour shifts as many as 5 days a week and without planning ahead I would make some terrible eating choices.  Let’s face it, it’s convenient to run to a fast food restaurant.  You get your meal in minutes and don’t have to do dishes or prepare the meal.  But, if you are focusing on eating healthy it is the WORST decision you can make.  The food you are getting is most likely of low quality, poorly prepared and of low nutritional value.  In order to lose weight you need to have high quality foods that are easily broken down in the body and that are full of vitamins and minerals that your body needs to run like a well-oiled machine.

I have completed several at home workouts since I started my fitness journey in 2011.  I have lost a over 30 lbs and 2 dress sizes while doing so and have used the program’s nutrition guides and Shakeology as a part of my healthy eating routine.

Here are some tips of I have learned along the way that will help you save time and make healthier decisions while on a busy schedule:

Tip #1: Plan Ahead

Take one or two days during your week and make them food prep days.  Plan out your meals for the days you are working and make a shopping list for the items you will need using the nutrition guide and recipes that come with your workout program.  If you don’t have one Pinterest is also a great place to find healthy recipes.  I have pinned some of my own favorites on my Pinterest page as well.  Feel free to click the Pinterest icon on my home page to check out some of my healthy recipes or go there now by clicking here.  If you are doing the 21 Day Fix workout be sure to check out my Portion Control Diet Board for some great recipes that are 21 Day Fix approved too. Then get to the store on one day and get everything you will need.  This can save time as you aren’t running back and forth to the store every day to pick up something you need to prepare a meal.

Tip #2: Stock up on freezer bags and Tupperware containers

I am constantly using ziplock baggies, freezer bags and Tupperware containers to hold my meals.  It is great for storing pre-cut veggies, couscous, and even chicken or meats.  It is best to buy in bulk and then separate the amounts you are going to need for each meal.  This way you can freeze or refrigerate the portions you will need and those you will save for later on in the week.

Tip #3: Prep Your Meals

You have your ingredients at home so now it is meal prep time!  Believe me this is the best way you can prepare healthy meals and snacks ahead of time and really feel great about your meal choices.  I love this part!  I personally cut up green peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc for salads and bag them in the fridge for a few days.  Then, when the time comes to make a salad for lunch I just pull them out and prepare them in a matter of minutes instead of spending time cutting them up.

I also prepare couscous, brown rice or quinoa ahead of time and place in the fridge.  When I need to make a serving for my lunch while working I simply use the portion control containers from the 21 Day Fix program and make the perfect healthy portion to bring to work.

I also season and cook chicken and beef I will need as well.  It’s simple to cook up some chicken on the stove top with some coconut oil.  I usually cook a pound or two at a time on meal prep day.  I then put the amount I need for four days in the fridge and bag the others into freezer bags and freeze until later.  It’s so much easier to thaw out chicken and warm up in the microwave or stove top later on than cooking the entire amount I need every day.

I even prep entire meals for dinner as well.  For instance I made turkey chili in a large quantity the other day.

I then portioned out the chili and placed them into Tupperware containers and put them in the freezer.  This will then be three lunches or dinners that I just have to warm and serve!  Totally healthy too!

Tip #4: Make A Shake

A great way to have a complete meal of dense nutrition is to have a shake everyday.  I personally drink one Shakeology a day as a meal.  If you are on the run you can simply bring a glass of water or milk and a shaker cup with you.  Or if you have a few minutes before running the kids to school in the morning you can whip up a fantastic shake with some milk, a banana, and some peanut butter.  That is my favorite!  The options are endless with recipes too.  You also get a full 30 days worth of meals this way if you buy on home direct.  You save money and get a super healthy meal with it too.  If you want to learn more about Shakeology click here now.

Tip #5:  Repeat And Stay Consistent!

Just like working out or riding a bicycle practice makes perfect! Keep doing this activity and you will see how much time this really does save.  You will also experience a healthy lifestyle, more energy and less stress.  As a busy mom any time we can save and make our lives healthy in the process is priceless!
